A Polar Air Cargo 747-8F, registration N858GT performing flight PO916 from Cincinnati to Los Angeles, has suffered a podstrike on landing at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX).
The aircraft received unknown damage to its right outboard engine during an approach to runway 25L in strong winds conditions at LAX. The aircraft banked to the right during touchdown causing a podstrike of the #4 engine.
After the main gear had touched down, the pilots aborted the landing, went around and diverted to Ontario Int’l Airport (ONT) where it landed safely.
The damage is to be assessed. The same aircraft, performing a scheduled cargo service from Seoul (South Korea) to Los Angeles Int’l via Anchorage, had to divert to Cincinnati the day before the podstrike.
After the engine scrape had been reported, the tower controllers cleared the succeeding traffic to land on the same runway; an inspection was not carried out.
