After an 8-year hiatus, the French flag carrier Air France resumed flights to Tehran today.
The flight has been resumed after the economic sanctions placed on Iran were lifted in January this year. Other European airlines resuming service to Iran include British Airways, Lufthansa and Austrian Airlines.
Earlier this week, Air France made it optional for female cabin crew to fly the route after many protested against not wanting to wear a head scarf upon landing in Tehran. Now gay cabin crew members want the flight to be optional for them too as homosexuality is punishable by death in Iran.
Air France CEO Frederic Gagey believes the flight will become very profitable: “it’s a touristic destination which I believe is going to become very popular, very attractive.”.
Originally planned as a 3 weekly flight with an A320, the route will now be flown with a mix of A330-200s and A340-300s.
