This week, low-cost carrier Norwegian announced that they will be launching a new domestic route from their Barcelona base. From July 8 this year, they will fly from Barcelona to Bilbao, in northern Spain.
They wish to go head head-to-head with Vueling, who is currently the sole operator flying between Bilbao and Barcelona. The route will start with daily flights between the two cities. In the winter season, Norwegian will increase the number of weekly flights to 19, consisting of 3 daily flights on weekdays and 2 daily on Saturdays and Sundays.
This is the fourth domestic route Norwegian offers from Barcelona, following the launch of routes to Gran Canaria and Tenerife in October, and Palma de Mallorca, which was inaugurated earlier this week on Wednesday, June 1. It will be their first mainland domestic route from El Prat.
Norwegian will offer 6 more routes from Barcelona this summer compared to summer 2015. This means that their Barcelona base now has routes to 21 destinations in 8 European countries. Norwegian has said that Spain is one of the most important markets and one of the fastest growing. Last year the airline carried nearly 5 and a half million passengers on flights to, from and within Spain.
