Qatar Airways has followed through threats to cancel acceptance of its first A320neos, CEO Akbar al Baker has announced.
Reuters reports that the Qataris have refused to take delivery of A7-AJB (cn 6772) with threats to walk away from four more, should Pratt &Whitney fail to resolve problems with its PW1100G engines.
“We will walk away from subsequent aircraft if the matter is not resolved” Al Baker told reporters at the IATA annual meet in Dublin.
Given the delays in the delivery of the upgrade jets, Al Baker said the Qatari airline would open talks with P&W rival CFM over the use of its Leap 1A engines to power its fleet of A320neos.
In response, the US engine manufacturer has hit back at Al Baker’s claims stating that the PW1100G had been “fully certified and met performance and contract specifications”. “We have resolved the very few initial teething items airlines have experienced”, P&W said in a statement.
