In March 2018, Qantas will be dropping Melbourne-London via Dubai when the airline introduces Melbourne-Perth-London. The change was announced now that tickets for the new Perth-London route have been put out for sale.
The new route will be served with their new Boeing 787-9, replacing the current London route flown with the A380. Partner airline Emirates will respond to this move by introducing the A380 on their third daily flight to Melbourne, currently flown with a 777-300ER.
This will free up an A380 to be used on high-demand routes to Asian cities from Melbourne and Sydney.
“The travel experience for customers connecting in Perth will be seamless, with Qantas building a new international transit lounge at Perth Airport,” Qantas announced regarding the new changes. “People joining the flight to London from other parts of Australia (including regional Western Australia and Adelaide) will find it a smooth transition with international and domestic flights arriving and departing from the same terminal, complete with dedicated customs and immigration.”
